People celebrate Valentine’s Day in different ways. One of the most popular ways to celebrate is to present flowers to your loved one. In honor of this tradition, Sempermed has hand-picked our StarMed® ROSE glove – the perfect piece of cheery hand protection to protect the ones you “gLove”.
No one knows exactly how Valentine’s Day came to be, but there are several myths and legends that lend to its mystery. Perhaps it started in Ancient Rome, centered around the archaic festival Lupercalia, which is observed in mid-February to avert evil spirits and purify the city, releasing health and fertility. Perhaps it is tied to one of the numerous early Christian martyrs who were named Valentine.
It was Geoffrey Chaucer, known as the Father of English literature, who first introduced the concept that the day was associated with romantic love. The day evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”).
Cupid, another symbol of Valentine’s Day, became associated with it because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. Cupid often appears on Valentine cards holding a bow and arrows because he is believed to use magical arrows to inspire feelings of love.
In modern times, the practice of exchanging cards was extended to all manner of gifts. Such gifts typically include roses, jewelry, and chocolates. The National Retail Federation estimates that U.S. consumers will spend around $18.2 billion on Valentine’s Day in 2017.
No matter the real story, love is at the center of the tradition. At Sempermed, our tagline says it all – “We are People Protection”. Want to send some “ROSEs” to someone you gLove? Contact us at www.GloveInfo@sempermedusa.com or 800.366.9545.
